A.L. (Ayo) Gariba (they/he) is a Black queer and trans visual artist, writer, researcher and award-winning filmmaker from Ghana and Lesotho and based in Toronto.  

Their primary mediums include film, photography and illustration. Ayo's work centres questions of home, (in)visibility, liminality and (un)belonging as they relate to Black queer and trans* African diasporic subjectivity. He has recently begun exploring how grief shapes desire and longing and is fascinated by premonitory dreams.

Ayo has a BA and MA in Women and Gender Studies from the University of Toronto, where his research analyzed how Black queer and trans diasporic artistic and cultural production provides roadmaps for alternative understandings of home, belonging, kinship and return.
