Co-PI | University of British Columbia
Dr. Gunilla Öberg is a professor at the University of British Columbia. She is the PI of Egesta, co-leads All Our Chemical Relations and is the PI for the curriculum development subproject. She is a recent settler from Sweden who arrived in what is now known as Vancouver in 2006. She is inspired by her over 30 years of experience leading complex, interdisciplinary research and education projects, as well as her in-depth knowledge of chlorine biogeochemistry, the environment, and sustainability. Since 2012, when she closed her chlorine biogeochemistry laboratory, her research has centred on the production of science for policy and the notion of expertise in complex areas where science is uncertain and disputed. In that realm, she is currently focusing on chemicals management, how to teach science students about the context dependence and ethical implications of science, and how to meaningfully and respectfully include Indigenous knowledge and expertise in the management and assessment of chemical risk.
(The curriculum development subproject, which is hosted by Egesta, reimagines the training of the next generation of chemical risk assessment professionals, in collaboration with our partners at the University of Toronto, the University of Guelph, both in Canada, and the University of Auckland, Aotearoa (New Zealand), as well as governmental departments in both countries.)
